I started getting sick the day after Cookie Day (so, last Thursday) and seemed to take a long time to kick it. Wednesday was the first day I managed to make and execute a to-do list, mostly of things that involved me sitting at my computer. Yesterday I at last was able to tackle a more physical project and felt driven to do a major clean/purge in the Blessings' rooms.
If you want some encouragement that your house isn't that bad, take a closer look at this Picasa album (complete with notes)! We're not done yet, but we've made a great deal of progress.

we rotate toys. I put some bins of toys in an off limits area for a few mos - then bring them back and take some others away for a while. it seems to work well. but siblings sharing a room = mess! even with only 2 girls in 1 room at our house it always seems to be a mess. I basically ask them to clean it up once a day so it doesn't get out of hand - then about once every month I go in there by myself and PURGE.
Hi Lauren
We try to limit our kids generally to what they are able to pick up without parental assistance. We don't want them to have more toys than they are developmentally able to pick up. Sometimes we get gifts and end up with more than we need and then when we get rid of toys, the kids are sometimes even happy to get rid of them.
Rid out and Rotate!
Less is best!
Only have at hand the amount of toys they are able to care for/ play with/put away.
Purging stuff is a good habit for every stage of life.
Of course you get to be involved in training them to take care and overseeing that the care gets done. Make sense? Many of your blessings are old enough to make some decisions about which toys they are ready to either part with or put away until a rotation.
Less is best, even if some toys are stored away for a time. Too much stuff is simply a burden!
I so appreciated the pictures Laurel! :) Comforting!
My only problem with the "less toys" scenario is that when all else is gone, then the chairs, couch cushions and blankets come into heavy use. Seems like there is always SOMETHING available to cover the floor with!
But, the more toys there are, the deeper the pile gets.
Right now I guess I feel like there is no cure, and I'm very in the mood to send my children outside for the whole summer! ("Okay, there's peanut butter sandwiches and a roll of TP on the porch, I'll see you at bedtime!") Ha ha!
